Bereavement support in Motor Neurone Disease

University of Central Lancashire School of Psychology

About the Project
Reference RS/20/07

Applications are invited for a fulltime or part time MSc by research studentship in the School of Psychology. The studentship is funded through the ‘small care grant’ awarded to Lancashire and South Cumbria MND Care and Research centre by the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) to develop evidence-based approaches for provision of bereavement support in Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and is tenable for up to a maximum of two years (subject to satisfactory progress). Funding will cover the payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference between the UK/EU and international tuition fee rate. Any international applicants who would require a part-time study visa should refer to the UKVI website for further information.

The project is in collaboration between the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) Dr Belinda (Bradley) Hornby and Professor Suresh Chhetri, Consultant Neurologist at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will be required to meet the terms and conditions of UCLan, and the Lancashire and South Cumbria MND Care and Research Centre based at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

International students will already need to have a valid visa in place to study in the UK prior to applying for the studentship, and this visa must be valid for the entirety of the course length.

The bursary will cover UK tuition fees only. International applicants will be required to cover the difference between UK and International fees, if successful in the studentship application process.

The studentship does not cover living expenses, regardless of nationality.

Project Title

Bereavement support in Motor Neurone Disease

Project Description

The aim of the research project is to contribute towards understanding and improved provision of bereavement support for bereaved caregivers/families of patients with MND, in line with the 2017 NICE recommendations relating to the need for specialist caregiver bereavement-support services and MNDA 2020/21 strategy. Therefore, the MRes student will be expected to conduct a systematic review around the areas of bereavement support in MND and study the bereavement support provided by Lancashire and South Cumbria MND care and research centre.

Candidates should have (or expect to have been formally awarded by 04th January 2021) an upper second-class honours degree recognised by the British Psychological Society as bestowing Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) or an equivalent qualification. Applications from candidates with a degree in a related field will be considered provided they can demonstrate substantive research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) and analysis training. It is essential that the successful applicant is also willing to attend systematic review training and take a rigorous approach to research. As this is a sensitive subject it is also important that the candidate is happy to work in this area of research and has appropriate levels of empathy towards those suffering from Motor Neuron Disease and their carers.

EU and International applicants will also need to hold an English Language qualification at IELTS 6.5 (no sub-score below 6.0) or equivalent qualification.

Applicants are required to provide supporting information as part of their application form that specifies the following: (i) how you meet the Research Student Specification; (ii) your reasons and motivation for applying to study at the University of Central Lancashire; and (iii) your academic interests generally, and particularly how these relate to the description of the project supplied
